What Is the Oily Lustre of Hetian Jade?

A plain-English explanation of Hetian jade’s oily lustre, how it feels in the hand and why it is not a layer of oil.

People often describe good Hetian jade as oily or unctuous. They do not mean that the surface is greasy. The phrase describes a combination of visual softness and a smooth, dense touch that makes the stone seem to hold light rather than throw it back like glass.

What you can see

Under soft daylight, a jade with an oily lustre tends to show a calm glow instead of a hard, mirror-like flash. The surface may look slightly damp or waxy even when it is perfectly clean and dry. Fine polish, compact structure and the way light travels through the material all contribute to that impression.

What you can feel

Run a clean fingertip across a properly finished edge. The touch should feel smooth and even, with a gentle resistance rather than a brittle, glassy slide. A rounded 9.5 mm peace plaque can feel like a small, solid object in the hand. A thinner 6 mm plaque may feel lighter, but its surface can still be fine and pleasantly unctuous.

Do not use the phrase as a test by itself

Oiliness is subjective and affected by lighting, polish, skin oils and screen photography. It cannot identify Xinjiang origin or prove seed-jade provenance on its own. Compare structure, translucency, inclusions, workmanship, daylight images and independent testing. A laboratory report and a close-up video are more useful than a seller repeating the word oily.

When buyers say a plaque feels like a soft rice cake rather than a piece of glass, they are trying to describe this blend of density, smoothness and restrained light. The best way to understand it is to handle a real piece and compare it honestly.
